Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) Microspheres Encapsulating a Viral-Binding Protein, PmRab7, for Preventing White Spot Syndrome Virus in Shrimp
Journal: ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering, 2025
Key Finding: This landmark study tackled one of the biggest threats to the aquaculture industry: the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), a pathogen that can cause 100% mortality in shrimp. Key findings include:
- Enhanced Antiviral Protection: By encapsulating the antiviral protein PmRab7 in our microspheres, we significantly increased the survival rate of virus-challenged shrimp compared to shrimp treated with the unencapsulated protein.
- Sustained Release: The microspheres protected the sensitive protein from degradation and provided a sustained release profile, which is critical for maintaining therapeutic effects over time in an aquaculture environment.
- Proven Safety: In vivo safety evaluations confirmed that both the standard PLGA and chitosan-coated PLGA microspheres are safe for use in shrimp.
Business Implication: This research demonstrates the immense power and versatility of our encapsulation platform, extending its application beyond nutraceuticals into the high-value animal health and aqua-biotechnology sectors. We have proven our ability to protect complex therapeutic proteins and deliver them effectively in a challenging real-world environment, offering a tangible solution to a critical problem for a multi-billion dollar global industry.
